A MOTHER’S PERSPECTIVE
My son, Brendan, is 16 years old and has been matched with his Big Brother, Isaac, for 5 years. I wish I could show you who he was when he started this program and how much this relationship has transformed his life.
I enrolled Brenden in the program because he was not getting enough of a positive male influence in his life. His father and I had separated, and although our family unit is strong, I am not equipped to provide the guidance that a male can, especially during the adolescent years.
Since that first match introduction, Brenden has made such a positive transformation. His confidence has grown, his grades have improved, and I no longer have to stay on him about throwing out the trash, cleaning his room, or participating in the chores that help our family thrive. His Big has taught him to be proud of who he is and pushed him in ways that I could not as his mother.
I owe it to BBBS and Isaac! Big Brothers Big Sisters encourages parent/guardian participation and celebrates them for entrusting their kids to our research-based mentoring program. Parents and guardians are an integral part of our community. They are the first line of protectors, supporters, and mentors for every kid, but sometimes we need extra help.
That is where Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas is stepping up to serve our communities. By serving over 300 youth annually in Northwest Arkansas, BBBS is able to support families like mine.
This holiday season, help empower youth by giving today. Each and every donation helps pave the way for a brighter future for the youth (and families) served.
Best wishes to you and your family, and have a safe, happy new year!
Sincerely,
Tamara
