MAKING BIG IMPACT: AAPI HERITAGE MONTH

This month, BBBS NWA celebrates the contributions and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in NWA. We chatted with Annie G., a Big in the BBBS NWA program about her experience as an Asian American mentor.

1. What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you?

This is a great opportunity to celebrate our Filipino roots, appreciate the sacrifices my family endured as immigrants to thrive and succeed in this country, and shine a light on the contributions of Filipinos across the US.

2. What is your favorite part of being matched with Rebecca, and being a mentor in the BBBS NWA program?

I think my daughter Selena and I most enjoy introducing Rebecca to various foods from different cultures and seeing her numerous reactions to them. From Boba Tea to French crepes, we are always up to the challenge!

3. Do you see representation as an essential part of mentorship? If so, why?

Absolutely! It’s an essential part of any position of influence, to be frank. As a woman of Filipino descent, I owe it to my gender, ethnic group, my children, and my peers to be that example of leadership and help forge a path for others to follow.

4. What has been your favorite #matchmoment so far in your match with Rebecca?

Our favorite moment with Rebecca was when we spent an evening at Climb Bentonville where we saw her chip away in small steps at her fear of heights by challenging herself and trying different things to conquer her fear. It was definitely rewarding to see her succeed while having fun!

Mentors like Annie inspire potential and create bright futures for Littles in NWA. Learn more about our JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, inclusion) initiatives at BBBSNWA.org/JEDI.
